Cat Weatherill

Cat is a storyteller and writer.

She was born and raised in Liverpool, where her grandmother saw an angel, her uncle fell off the Liver Building and her grandfather donated his shirt buttons to Beatles’ fans. Now she lives in Wales, a land of mist and magic.

After school, Cat studied Drama at Hull University. She worked as an actor and singer then became a professional storyteller in 1998.

Cat uses all the skills she has learned over the years in her storytelling. She’s a strong physical performer, graceful one moment, grotesque the next! She can be fast and funny, or bewitchingly still. Sometimes she sings. Sometimes she uses rhyme or rhythm. For Cat, telling a story means taking a listener on a journey. The road may twist and turn… it may grow dark and dangerous (Cat tells scary ghost stories!) … but then, unexpectedly, there’ll be a shimmer of light… the shadows will melt away… and you’ll find something wondrous. And whatever it is, it won’t be boring…

Cat performs at storytelling and literature festivals both in the UK and abroad. She has enjoyed many sell-out shows at The Guardian Hay Festival, and appeared at the Barbican in London. Her international work includes the prestigious Festival d’Automne in Paris and Graz Tales in Austria. She also performs in arts centres, theatres, schools, museums, castles, woods and libraries, and in village venues under the National Rural Touring Scheme.

On television, Cat has been a guest presenter on Carlton Television’s Heart of the Country, and on radio she has performed live for two million listeners on Radio 4’s Front Row. She has also appeared on The Verb (Radio 3) Go 4 It (Radio 4) and The Big Toe Show (Radio 7)

NEWS FOR 2009

Cat writes:

CatThis year has already got off to a cracking start! I've been to Copenhagen to tell stories in a wonderful little club called the StoryBaZaar and I've been collaborating with the amazing folk band Bellowhead www.bellowhead.co.uk to create a family show for the South Bank Centre in London.

STORYTELLING I am developing two new story shows for adults. PEBBLES AND PENNIES is a collaboration with the acoustic duo Emma and the Professor - expect high energy and lots of singing! FALLING LIKE FEATHERS is a solo show which I'm creating specially for the Crick Crack Club's new venture at the Soho Theatre in London. I'm very excited!

The biggest storytelling festival in the UK this year will be the Festival at the Edge in July. I'll be there, doing one-hour versions of both my new shows. I hope the weather is kind! I'll pack my wellies just in case...

WRITING My first picture book is coming out this year. It's called BY LANTERN LIGHT and the lantern magically lights up when you press it! My fabulously funny novel THE HAIRY MARYS will be coming out too, I hope. I've finished writing a rather lovely book for 6 - 9 year olds called BINDY AND THE BOX OF WONDERS. I have my fingers crossed for that! And I've started writing a new novel for readers aged 10+. It's a dark romance... a bit scary, but lots of you out there like that, don't you?!

BE MY FRIEND! I have a brand new blog at www.bebo.com/catweatherill I'll be talking about what I'm up to and giving lots of tips about writing, so check it out! If you want to say hello or ask a question, that's the place to do it. And you can be one of my friends too!!

HOPES & DREAMS I hope to go to Krakow in Poland in the spring. My friend Krystyna is living there now and has invited me to stay. I hope to get that new novel finished! I hope to start work on a joint show with Kasper Sorensen, the fabulous Danish storyteller. And I dream of returning to the StoryBaZaar in Copenhagen... I have so many tales I want to tell there.

Big Happy Stories coverMy story CD has been selling like hot cakes since it came out last year! It's called BIG HAPPY STORIES and it features six magical tales for children under 7. It's great fun and guaranteed to keep little ones listening on those long car journeys we all seem to make these days. If you would like to buy a copy, drop me an email via the Contact Cat link. They cost £8 inc p&p.
